This marks the close of Phase V development for SAM, and the celebration of five and a half years of design and fabrication for what is arguably the most dynamic, perhaps the most advanced other-world habitat research center on planet Earth.

What the SAM team has accomplished since January 2021 is truly remarkable. Since April 2023, SAM has housed 5 visiting teams, 12 internal missions, and 30 unique crew members for a total of 65 sealed days. We have published 18 peer reviewed publications, with articles in Wired, New Scientist, Scientific American, and Science, with interviews on Arizona Public Media’s Science Friday, National Public Radio’s PRX, The Space Show, several local television stations, documentary films, and more.

Of equal importance is celebration of the skills and experience shared and gained by each of the individuals who took part in the construction of SAM. It was never easy, but what we accomplished, together, was incredible.

“I look to the future of SAM with hope that just as my team was the ‘next generation of Biospherian’, another generation will take SAM to the stars and beyond.” —Kai Staats, MSc, founder, lead designer, and director of research at SAM.
